Preparation & Cooking Steps
⏱ Total Time: ~1 hour (30 mins prep + 30 mins cook)
-
Marinate the Fish
In a bowl, combine lemon juice, salt, turmeric, paprika, garlic, ginger paste, and oil. Rub this mixture all over the fish, especially into the cuts. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes. -
Grill the Fish
Preheat your grill or grill pan. Grill the fish for 5–7 minutes per side, until fully cooked and nicely charred. -
Prepare the Coconut Sauce
Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden. Add garlic, ginger, green chili, and turmeric. Stir for 1–2 minutes. -
Simmer the Sauce
Pour in the coconut milk and simmer for 5–7 minutes until it thickens slightly. Add lemon juice and salt to taste. -
Finish the Dish
You can either pour the sauce over the grilled fish or return the grilled fish into the pan and baste it in the sauce for 2 more minutes to soak in the flavors. -
Serve Hot
Serve your Samaki wa Kupaka hot with steamed white rice, chapati, or ugali. Garnish with lemon wedges and fresh coriander if desired.
